Are Dust Mite Proof Covers Bed Bug Proof?

Frequently our existing customers want assurances that their existing dust mite covers also bed bug proof.

Dust Mite-proof Covers vs Bed Bug Proof Covers

Dust mites are microscopic; you cannot see them. They are also not highly mobile. They will live out their entire life very close to where they hatch. Dust mites do not bite, they produce a protein that when inhaled causes allergic reactions.

Dust mite-proof covers are designed to protect against the dust mites and their allergens. The covers provide a barrier between the sleeper and any dust mites that are in a mattress, pillow, or duvet.

The encasings cover all sides of the object encased (whether it is a mattress, box spring, pillow, duvet, or feather bed/topper) and zip closed. As the sleeper moves, the dust mites and their allergens become airborne, hit the dust mite proof cover and fall back down inside the cover. They never make it out of the cover.

Bed bugs are larger and visible. They are highly mobile. This is why they spread so easily.

They will crawl from surface to surface. Bed bugs feed on human (sometimes animal) blood. They have a feeding tube that they use to extract the blood from your body. Bed bugs leave a bit mark behind when they finish feeding.

Bed bug covers are designed to protect against bed bugs. Like dust mite covers, bed bug covers completely encase the object they protect. Whether it is a pillow, mattress, box spring or comforter they cover all sides and zip closed.

In addition, the back of the fabric is coated with a urethane coating that keeps the bed bug from sending their feeding tube through the fabric and making a meal of you.

This means that all bed bug covers will protect against dust mites and their allergens, but not all dust mite proof covers will protect against bed bugs.

Which Mattress Cover is Right for You?

If you have an active bed bug infestation, you must have bed bug covers to protect you from any bed bugs that are already in the mattress, box spring, pillow, or duvet.

Our AllergyCare Solution bed bug proof mattress covers were designed with the help of pest control and bed bug exterminators and the fabric was independently tested by Snell Scientifics, LLC. They are bed bug proof!

A standard dust mite proof cover will not give you the protection you need if bed bugs are already present in the bed.

If you do not currently have bed bugs, but would like to protect against ever having them in your mattress then a high-quality dust mite proof cover like our AllergyCare Pristine Luxury will do the trick.

Because they zip closed, they will keep bed bugs from ever getting into your bed. However, if you already have bed bugs, the bugs will be trapped under the cover but will still be able to feed through the fabric. You will not be protected.

Summary

In short, all bed bug covers provide dust mite protection. While most dust mite proof covers will keep bed bugs out they will not work for an active infestation. Which you use depends on whether or not bed bugs are present when you put the cover on the bed.

Wishing you the best of health
