Memory Foam Mattresses
The Shape Of A Good Night’s Sleep
Memory foam mattresses represented a
revolution in the sleep industry when they were first introduced. Using the
same material designed by NASA to help astronauts avoid the effects of zero
gravity conditions, bedding companies were able to craft mattresses that
naturally conformed to a person’s frame, providing maximum support and
helping consumers to get a better night’s sleep.
Soon, popular manufacturers like Sealy and
Temper-Pedic were offering mattresses that they called “memory foam”. These
mattresses promised more comfort than standard coil mattresses for a variety
of reasons, the primary one being the ability to provide more support at key
pressure points so that the spine remains aligned. Because standard
mattresses tend to get distorted over time, they can cause the body to lose
alignment, resulting in a great deal of pain.
In fact, sleep related spinal and joint
pain is one of the biggest complaints most chiropractor’s face. The only way
to correct this adequately is to ensure that the entire spine is supported
uniformly. Since people vary in size, weight and sleeping position, this can
be difficult to achieve. Memory foam mattresses help correct this by
providing maximum support regardless of these variables. At the same time, a
foam core can reduce distortion caused by the movement of your sleeping
partner.
Because memory foam reduces spinal
alignment issues, it can actually improve your health and help to cut down
on medical expenses as a result. For individuals who routinely wake up with
a stiff neck, aching back or painful joints, this kind of relief is
priceless. Given the expense of doctor’s visits, medications and other
medical treatments, having a way to permanently correct sleep related pain
is particularly valuable.
Of course, even Memory foam mattresses are
not without their drawbacks. The foam can be temperature sensitive, meaning
even the slightest change in room temperature can affect its ability to bend
and conform to your body. In cooler temperatures, it may stiffen and be less
flexible, and in severe heat, it can become too flaccid and not respond to
your body at all.
Also, because the foam requires a certain
amount of pressure in order to make it adjust to body shape, these
mattresses can be ineffective for particularly small individuals, who lack
the body mass to properly engage with the foam. For all of its innovative
technology, memory foam still lacks any ability to be manually adjusted to
make up for temperature extremes or to acclimate to petite individuals.
One misconception many people, including
the people who sell them, is that the mattresses are dust mite proof. This
is simply not true. While the denseness of the foam keeps dust mites from
getting into the center of the mattress, they are still present. We always
recommend covering the
mattress with
dust mite covers, usually the 100% cotton fabric.
Perhaps the biggest downside of Memory foam
mattresses is their lack of durability. Memory foam tends to wear out
quicker than standard mattresses, meaning you’ll need to replace your
mattress more often. Considering the fact that these mattresses tend to be a
good deal more expensive than their traditional counterparts, this can add
up to a significant expense over time.
Getting a good night’s sleep is crucial to
maintaining good health, and nothing helps you to sleep better than the
proven effectiveness of memory foam. Overall, for a restful night no matter
your size and shape, you can’t really go wrong with this technology.
Wishing you the best of health
