There are two main types of nebulizers: jet nebulizers and ultrasonic nebulizers. Keep in mind, PULMICORT RESPULES should ONLY be used with a jet nebulizer. Jet nebulizers use a compressor to move a pressurized stream of air down a narrow tube and through an opening. This creates a vacuum that pushes the medicine out of the nebulizer. Ultrasonic nebulizers use high-frequency sound waves generated by a special crystal. Liquid medicine is usually delivered to the crystal, where it forms a thin layer. Electricity causes the crystal to vibrate at an extremely high frequency. This vibration forces the thin liquid layer through mesh, creating a fine mist. PULMICORT RESPULES is not to be used with an ultrasonic nebulizer. All of our DeVilbiss Nebulizers are jet nebulizers. Disposable Nebulizer

Aerosol Therapy

Asthma

Asthma is a condition that affects the airways – the small tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs.

When a person with asthma comes into contact with something that irritate their airways (an asthma trigger), the muscles around the walls of the airways tighten so that the airways become narrower and the lining of the airways becomes inflamed and starts to swell. Sometimes a sticky mucus or phlegm builds up which can further narrow the airways making it difficult to breathe.

The common symptoms of asthma are wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath and tightness of the chest. There are various treatments available for asthma sufferers, which include; inhalers, spacers, nebulisers, steroids and complimentary therapies.

COPD

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a term used for a number of conditions including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. COPD leads to damaged airways in the lungs, causing them to become narrower and making it harder for air to get in and out of the lungs. Typical symptoms of COPD are breathlessness, a persistent cough and wheezing. The word ‘chronic’ means that the problem is long-term.

The most common cause of COPD is smoking, although inherited problems and occupational factors can cause the disease. COPD cannot be cured but there are a variety of treatments available that can make the disease more manageable. These include Long Term Oxygen Therapy (LTOT), bronchodilators, nebulisers and pulmonary rehabilitation.

Cystic Fibrosis

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) affects the internal organs, especially the lungs and digestive system, by clogging them with thick sticky mucus. This makes it hard to breathe and digest food. It is one of the most commonly inherited life shortening diseases.

Symptoms of CF can include an incessant cough, repeated chest infections, increased phlegm production, prolonged diarrhoea and poor weight gain. It is common for people with CF to encounter some difficulties with their lungs. A combination of physiotherapy and medication can help control lung infections and prevent lung damage.
