It's our Anniversary - Celebrating 20 Years of Service
Since 1989 we have been helping people that suffer from allergies, asthma,
and MCS as well as those who just want a healthier place to live or work. We've
helped thousands of people over the years. Many of these people might be just
like you, trying to find solutions to their indoor environmental or health
problems. Whether you are a new to our store or newsletter or a long-time
customer, we want to say THANK YOU!
Please join us in celebrating our anniversary this year. We will have monthly
sales and promotions all year long as a way to say Thank You for making The
Allergy Store a success for the past 20 years. We are looking
forward to the next 20 years, looking at ways to increase our already high level
of customer service and looking to keep our prices low. We are also
constantly looking for new products that meet our high standards for
effectiveness, quality, and value. If you hear of something new, let us
know. We will be more than happy to test it out.
Thank you again for allowing us to be a success for the last 20 years and
keep your eyes out for those special 20 year celebration sales.
Winter Allergies
Many people, those that suffer from pollen and mold allergies, get welcome
relief from their allergies during the winter months. However, if you happen to
live in a part of the country where it is warm year-round (Florida), the winter
may not provide much if any relief.
On the other hand many people’s allergies and asthma get worse during the winter
since we don’t spend too much time out side when it’s below freezing. We like to
stay indoors where it is warm and cozy.
Unfortunately our pets also spend more time indoors which increases the amount
of pet dander floating around. If there are smokers in the house they are less
likely to step outside or open a window because it is cold. For others the
dryness associated with running heaters 24/7 may bring on an asthma attack.
People also seem to sleep more during the winter months, our way of hibernation.
The problem is dust mites love the bed too. If your bed is not covered you may
find the longer you sleep the worse you feel.
Bathe your pets more often. Make sure you dry them well before you let them
outside. You can also use products like Allerpet pet solution and Allersearch
denaturing sprays to control the allergens from pet dander.
Get your loved one to quit smoking> It is better for them and will save them
lots of money. If that is not an option just get them to open a window or get an
air cleaner to get rid of the smoke.
For those that don’t like the dryness run a humidifier to add some moisture back
in to the house.
Make sure your bed is covered with dust mite proof covers. They stop the dust
mite allergens from getting to you while you sleep. Don’t forget to wash your
sheets and blankets weekly in 140 degree hot water or use Allerwash or DeMite in
warm or cold water.
If you need treatment it is the same whether it is summer or winter,
antihistamines. Over-the-counter antihistamines are available or you can get a
prescription from your doctor. Either way they usually help relieve the allergy
symptoms for a while.
Cold or Allergies
Symptoms of allergies and colds can be similar, but here's how to tell the
difference:
Timing - Colds are more common during the winter months, whereas
allergies are more common in the spring through the fall. Trees, plants, and
grasses are blooming and pollinating.
Symptoms - Both Colds and allergies cause runny nose, watery eyes,
sneezing, congestion and headaches. In general you feel run down. Many times
cold symptoms come on gradually whereas allergy symptoms hit you all at once.
Sneezing is more common symptom of allergies and fevers accompany colds and flu,
but not allergies.
Mucus - Colds cause thick yellowish nasal discharge Allergies generally
cause clear, thin, watery mucus discharge
Duration - Cold symptoms generally last 1 to 2 weeks. Allergy symptoms
will continue until you are no longer exposed to the allergens.
