What's New At The Allergy Store
Summertime is Here and So are Allergies.
Summer is
here. The kids are out of school, the weather is warm,
or hot if you live in the south, and it’s time to play
outdoors. Unfortunately for millions it can also be a
very miserable time of year.
Most
summertime allergies are caused by the pollens, grasses
and molds that are floating in the air. In some areas
the pollen count is so great you can literally see the
pollen on the surfaces of buildings and cars. Sometimes
the greenish/yellow tint on our cars here in the
southeast can last for weeks.
Pollen
levels will vary day to day, but you can monitor the
local news for the pollen index counts or go to
Pollen.Com. Typically, pollen levels are
highest between six and ten in the morning and on windy
days.
Here are
just a few things you can do to reduce exposure to
summertime allergies.
- Look
at the daily pollen reports.
- Stay
inside during the morning.
- Don’t
play or sit on freshly cut grass.
- Drive
with the windows up.
- Wear
a dust or sport mask when riding bikes or ATVs.
- Drink
lots of water.
- Take
a shower and wash your hair as soon as you get
inside. Your hair collects lots of pollen when you
are outside.
Pets Get Summertime Allergies Too.
During the summer months pets can suffer from the
same allergens that we do, trees, grass pollen and
molds, they just react differently.
Pet allergies are not difficult to understand. Just keep
in mind your dog or cat do not act like we do when we
have allergies. Allergy symptoms usually show up as
inflammation of the skin and not hacking or sneezing.
They may get some sort of respiratory infection that can
cause sneezing, hacking, runny eyes, and sore throats
but they are seldom symptoms of allergies.
If you notice your pet starts scratching and chewing
more than usual then that may signal the beginning of an
allergic condition. Symptoms may include licking at feet
or chewing at their toes and tails, having very red skin
where they chew, especially under the armpits and in the
groin areas. If they continue to chew and scratch an
infection may set in causing bumps and scabs to develop.
More serious infections can develop, sometimes producing
dermatitis, also known as a "hot spot." These sores
usually are moist and smell bad.
Many times it is hard to figure out what they are
allergic to. Sometimes the symptoms are sporadic at
best. If it is an isolated episode, the main thing you
need to do is to stop the itching, which should keep
them from scratching. We recommend use
Petaseptic Lotion to stop the itching which stops
the scratching.
Hopefully if you catch it early and
there has been little to no skin abrasion, then there
may be no skin infection to deal with. However , if they
have been scratching for awhile, sores may form quickly
and the infection will need to be addressed with
antibiotics. The worst (and most costly) mistake to make
is to put off treatment, which almost always leads to
expensive vet bills.
So this summer enjoy the great outdoors but keep an eye
on the pets, especially the dog, because they can have
allergies too.
Family, Summer Vacation and Pet
Allergies.
Pretty soon families will be heading home to share some
quality time with the family or children will be going
to Grandma and Grandpa's house for the summer. What do
you do if someone you love has allergies to pets. The
answer to that question may be simpler than you think.
Start wiping down your pets, dogs or cats, with Allerpet
Pet Solution as soon as you know they are coming for a
visit. It is a special solution that is 100% safe for
your pet that will neutralize the dander already on your
pet.
If possible I would put them up in a room without
carpet. All types of carpeting hold a ton of allergens.
Even clean carpets! Then thoroughly clean the room
paying special attention to the floors and furniture.
Vacuum the upholstered furniture and treat it with a
denaturing spray like
Allersearch ADMS spray. Strip the beds and wash
everything. Very Important - keep the pets out of the
room once you know they are coming to visit.
When they get there, keep the pets away from them as
much as possible. Be sure to wash your hands after you
handle your pets. Then give the children and grand
children a hug.
Lastly,
sit back, relax and enjoy your family.
Aquathin Corporation Receives E Star Award
As many of you know we have been an authorized Aquathin
dealer for about 10 years. Since 1980 they have been
making the finest water purification systems in
the market. When they say nobody does it better, they
mean it.
We are very pleased to announce that the Aquathin Corp.,
based in Pompano Beach, FL, received the “E Star” award,
the highest award bestowed by the US Commerce
Department, for its continuing efforts to increase and
promote US exports.
Company President Alfred J. Lipshultz and several others
from the company traveled to the White House in
Washington last month, where they met with President Bush in
the Oval Office and were presented with the award by
Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez.
Aquathin is a manufacturer of point-of-use and
point-of-entry (POU/POE) water filtration and softening
