Bed Bugs  - They Just Keep On Bugging You

Every day we get calls or see someone who is having a problem with bed bugs.

According to a study done by Harvard School of Public Health bed bugs are increasingly becoming a problem within residences of all kinds, including homes, apartments, hotels, cruise ships, dormitories and shelters.

Bed bugs and their relatives occur nearly worldwide. Bed bugs became relatively scarce during the latter part of the 20th century, but their populations have resurged in recent years, particularly throughout parts of North America, Europe, and Australia. They are most abundant in rooms where people sleep, and they generally hide nearest the bed or other furniture used for sleeping. Bed bugs are most active in the middle of the night, but when hungry, they will venture out during the day to seek a host. Their flattened bodies allow them to conceal themselves in cracks and crevices around the room and within furniture. Favored hiding sites include the bed frame, mattress and box spring. Clutter around the room offers additional sites for these bugs to hide, and increases the difficulty in eliminating bed bugs once they have become established.  (Read Complete Article)

Your Stuffy Nose Could Mean More Than A Cold

Runny nose, headache and watery eyes are often attributed to the common cold, but they can actually be signs of allergies, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI).

"Millions of Americans think they are suffering from a cold during the winter months when they're actually experiencing allergies," said Anju Peters, MD, Chair of the AAAAI's Rhinosinusitis Committee. "Cold and allergy symptoms can be very similar, making it hard to decipher a difference between the two. The main difference is the length of time symptoms last. A cold normally disappears after a week or so, but allergies can last much longer. In order to receive proper diagnosis and treatment, it is important to differentiate between a cold and allergies,"   (Read Complete Article)

Pets Have Allergies Too!

When a pet scratches, bites or chews excessively, chances are it is suffering from an allergy. The cause of the allergy, termed an allergen, could be virtually anything in a pet's environment. In some instances, a highly allergic pet may have several allergies simultaneously. Identifying the cause of the allergy requires teamwork between the pet owner and the veterinarian. The same teamwork is needed to control the allergy.

The most common allergy affecting dogs and cats is flea bite allergy. It occurs when a dog or cat is exposed to flea saliva at the time of a flea bite.

Controlling fleas in a pet's environment is the obvious treatment for flea bite allergy. To do this, both the pet and its environment should be treated. Flea collars provide a small measure of relief. However, some pets are allergic to the collars. Flea powders, sprays, shampoos and dips can help rid pets of fleas. Always read and follow label directions. Excessive use of any of these products may be hazardous for an individual pet. A veterinarian often prescribes drugs that kill fleas or break the parasite's life cycle.
